As a member of the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering's leadership team reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Assistant Dean of Marketing and Communications is responsible for providing leadership in the development and execution of a strategic marketing and communication plan(s) for the school.Â Working with senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, alumni, and industry partners, this position will lead the development of a branding strategy for Johns Hopkins Engineering, and manage all of the school's associated marketing and communications activities, including use of print, online, and social media tools.Â The Assistant Dean will be responsible for strategic and annual planning, developing and monitoring metrics regarding internal and external advertising, direct and online marketing, branding, printed materials, and public relations activities in support of the school's mission, vision and strategic goals. Primary responsibilities include daily leadership and management of the marketing and communication teams and active collaboration with internal and external constituencies to effectively promote, monitor and evaluate marketing, recruitment, branding, and communication activities. Additional responsibilities include ensuring resources are efficiently and effectively utilized to have meaningful impact on school and institutional goals as they relate to recruitment and retention of students, faculty and staff, Â as well as promoting relationships with alumni, donors, business leaders, industry and community partners. The Assistant Dean will also be responsible for aligning activities with university-wide branding, marketing, and communications initiatives.Â This individual must be able to work in a collaborative environment, working closely with the senior leadership team and other campus constituencies in order to build consensus on strategy and execution of plans. Finally, the Assistant Dean will perform other emerging duties that support the mission, vision and goals of the Whiting School of Engineering and Johns Hopkins University.
Direct and oversee marketing and communications activities for the Whiting School of Engineering, with a focus on developing, implementing, and maintaining a strategic marketing and communications program to maximize the visibility of the school's education, research, and translational activities;
Develop and utilize formal and informal influence to ensure that the marketing and communication plans for each department and research center/institute are aligned with the school's overall branding, marketing and communications strategy;
Direct the Whiting School of Engineering's public relations plan to ensure that external and internal audiences are aware of the school's activities and resources; build strong relationships with university contacts including the Office of Communications, Development and Alumni Relations, Associate Dean for Research, and other academic units to collaborate on communication strategies and channels; act as chief liaison with the JHU's Office of Communications in providing content for press releases and news announcements;
Establish a strategic operating plan, budget, and calendar for marketing and communications activities, as well as metrics for measuring success;
Research, analyze and evaluate relevant market research to support integrated planning and implementation of relevant advertising, media, materials, and activities;
Establish recruitment strategies, student demographic profile targets for the school's future market, and lead the collaboration between faculty and staff to achieve recruitment and yield goals across full-time, part-time and online education.Â The successful candidate will have a collaborative and collegial interpersonal work style which will enable connections across the Whiting School of Engineering;
Leverage knowledge and understanding of changing demographics to drive how the Whiting School of Engineering will position and brand itself, communicate with multiple constituencies, differentiate itself, recruit, and ensure the success of students from diverse backgrounds;
Collaborate with staff to ensure a dynamic, interactive and comprehensive web presence that meets the needs of multiple constituencies and work closely with staff to encourage strategic use of social media.
Bachelor's degree (or equivalent experience) and at least 7+ years' of progressive leadership experience in the marketing, public relations and/or communications fields;
Exceptional knowledge of the latest digital and integrated marketing tools with significant experience in hiring and managing external media agencies;
Demonstrated skills in engaging with constituencies across multiple channels; demonstrated use of both traditional and emerging media platforms;
Outstanding communication skills, both written and oral, as well as excellent listening skills;
Demonstrated strong creative skills with excellent graphic and design sense;
Demonstrated ability to design and implement new initiatives; experience in applying innovative and strategic, long-term thinking;
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills-ability to analyze large amounts of data and glean actionable insights;
Demonstrated experience exhibiting exceptional judgment, strong leadership and management skills, and collaborative work style;
